Sing a New Song to the Lamb

‘And they [the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders] sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.”’Revelation 5:9-10 (NIVUK)

Reflection

There is a parallel here of the story in Exodus, when the blood of the Passover Lamb won the freedom of one nation, God’s chosen people, Israel. At the cross of Calvary, the blood of Jesus purchased and formed a new people, made up of all ethnicities, all languages, and all cultures, from every nation, tribe, and tongue.

The clearer we see the Lamb, the more naturally we worship. And as we worship, we are formed into a people who reflect the Lamb’s nature: humble, joyful, and victorious. Let’s remind ourselves that this vision of worship in Revelation is a picture of heaven as it is now. Jesus is ruling and reigning with all authority, at the right hand of the Father, which means that we are representatives of His rule and reign in heaven, here on the earth: ‘But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim his excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.’ 1 Peter 2:9 (ESV)

One of the ways that we reign with Him is to engage in prayer and intercession, proclaiming His love and salvation. As we saw yesterday, the prayers of God’s people are brought to the throne as incense in golden bowls. Our prayers form part of the aroma of heaven. What a beautiful thought!
