DAY 21

To Him Who Sits on the Throne and to the Lamb

‘Then I [John] looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise!” Then I heard every creature in heaven and on the earth, and under the earth and on the sea and all that is in them, saying: “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honour and glory and power for ever and ever!”’Revelation 5:11-13 (NIVUK)

Reflection

Jesus is to receive power, wealth, wisdom and strength, honour, glory, and praise. Notice the number of things He’s to receive – seven! Jesus is worthy of complete praise. All praise belongs to the One on the throne and to the Lamb. The Father and Son are worshipped together in perfect unity and glory. This beautiful picture of worship is where we, God’s people, join in as part of all creation, ‘…every creature in heaven and on earth, and under the earth and on the sea and all that is in them’ (v.13). The sound of worship comes to an incredible crescendo bringing glory to Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb.

As we declare the truth of who God is – His nature and His character – we circle back to the fact that we overcome, not by trying harder, but by seeing more clearly. It is because of the shed blood of Jesus that we can boldly enter through the door into the throne room of God’s presence. We no longer observe from a distance but are welcomed in with open arms to join in the worship of heaven.

This is the glorious call of Revelation, to fix our eyes on the throne, follow the Lamb and join the song that never ends. We do so, knowing that we join all of heaven in songs on endless repeat, bringing ceaseless praise to the one true God. As we declare His awesome deeds, we rise with fresh strength, renewed vision, and a deeper love. His rule and reign become more of a reality in our lives and release the authority for us to declare His Lordship here on the earth: ‘Worship the Lord in the splendour of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth. Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.”’ Psalm 96:9-10a (NIVUK)

OVERCOMER INSIGHT

Prayer FOCUS

  • Read aloud the whole of beautiful Psalm 96, written by King David. Give praise with your whole heart to the One on the throne and to the Lamb.
  • Remember, we can enter boldly into the holy presence of God by the blood of Jesus. Enjoy spending time with Him in worship and prayer. Pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to reveal and illuminate heaven in the here and now.
  • Commit to a life of worship, not just with words, but with your choices. Ask God to make your life a song of overcoming, bringing glory and honour to His wonderful name. When we gather as a church to worship, let’s not stand and spectate but participate, knowing that we are joining the angels worshipping around the heavenly throne.
