DAY 4

Jesus the Alpha and Omega

‘“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”’ Revelation 1:8 (ESV)

Here, God declares Himself ‘the Alpha and the Omega,’ which are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. He is the author of every story, the architect of every age, the One who was there at the beginning and who will bring history to its final conclusion.

The phrase, ‘who is, and who was, and who is to come’ spans past, present, and future. God’s presence is not confined to one moment in history, He is eternally present and always at work. He is ‘the Almighty’, and no power on earth, in heaven, or in hell can thwart His purposes.

Stunningly, Jesus also declares, ‘I am the Alpha and Omega, The First and the last, the Beginning and the End.’ Revelation 22:13 (NIVUK). This echoes the words of the Father, and once again, confirms Jesus’ divinity as the eternal Son of God.

The sovereignty of the Lord means every chapter of your life – even the difficult and painful ones – is known and held by Him. When you feel confused, or you’re waiting, questioning or longing for an answer to prayer, you can trust the One who knows the end from the beginning. As the psalmist declares, ‘The Lord will fulfil his purpose for me’ Psalm 138:8 (ESV). The apostle Paul is also confident of this, ‘And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.’ Philippians 1:6 (ESV)

You may not always understand the plot twists, but you can rest in the goodness of the Author. The powers of this world are temporary, but Jesus remains unchanging and unchallenged. You can surrender the ‘unfinished’ to Him, trusting that His story for you will end in perfect restoration.

OVERCOMER INSIGHT

Overcomers find peace in surrender, trusting that the Lord God, the Eternal One, holds every beginning and every ending in His hands.

Prayer FOCUS

  • Thank God for His faithfulness in every season. Declare His authority over your past, your present and your future. Ask for faith to trust Him, even when you can’t see the end.
  • Pray for wisdom and discernment to understand the season you are in. You may discern that you are under enemy attack and need to take authority in Jesus’ name over certain circumstances. Or you may need to pray for God’s strength to accept His plan, even when it’s not what you expected or desired.
  • Ask for courage to face the unknown. Give your ‘unfinished’ chapters to Jesus, knowing that He is the author and finisher of your faith.
  • Pray for those you know who have walked away from their faith – pray that a restoration of hope in Jesus, the Eternal One, would dispel any hurt, disappointment or confusion which has led them to a crisis of faith.
