DAY 7

Jesus the LIVING ONE

‘When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.”’ Revelation 1:17-18 (ESV)

Reflection

John’s reaction to Jesus’ majesty is to fall at His feet, awestruck and undone. But Jesus’ response is profoundly gentle; He touches John and says, “Fear not.” The words that sustained the saints of every age are offered to you today.

Why shouldn’t we fear? Because Jesus is the First and the Last, the One who spans all of history. He is ‘the living one’, once dead, now alive forever. The resurrection is not just an event; it is a person. Jesus holds the keys of Death and Hades. The greatest enemies are now under His command.

The apostle Paul proclaims, ‘Death is swallowed up in victory… thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.’ 1 Corinthians 15:54, 57 (ESV)

Jesus is not a small, tame, distant historical figure. He is the glorious, living, present Lord who has conquered death and hell. No matter what you fear; loss, uncertainty, even death itself, Jesus has already conquered it. His nail-scarred hands that hold the universe are the hands that lift you up. So, DON’T BE AFRAID! Whatever valley or shadow you walk through, you can trust the One who walks with you. The tomb is empty, the grave is powerless, hell has no claim on you, the keys are in the loving hands of the Good Shepherd, Jesus. ‘Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil… for your rod and your staff, they comfort me.’ Psalm 23:4-5 (ESV)

OVERCOMER INSIGHT

You can walk through every shadow because the Living One walks with you and holds every key. Fear loses its grip in the presence of the risen Christ.

Prayer FOCUS

  • Spend some time worshiping the risen King Jesus. Name your fears before Him and declare the truth that you have the same spirit that raised Christ from the dead living in you. As He overcame, so you, too, can overcome all fear and insecurity.
  • Pray for courage to live boldly and freely in the light of who you are in Christ. Resist the lies and intimidation of the enemy, who would try to tell you that you are not worthy of Christ’s love. Declare the truth that because Jesus holds the keys to death and hell, they are no longer threats to those who are in Him. He has overcome, so you can overcome.
  • Pray for those who don’t know the Lord – like sheep without a shepherd, wandering aimlessly, falling into the traps and snares of the enemy. Pray, that, like Jesus, you would be filled with compassion to tell people around you that there is a God in heaven who loves them and who longs for them to come to the knowledge of the truth of the One who has conquered death itself.
