DAY 18
Worthy are you, lord
‘Then I [John] saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”’Revelation 5:1-5 (NIVUK)
Reflection
Once again, we are reminded how important it is for us to look, to see and to behold. John sees in the right hand of the One on the throne, a scroll with seven seals. What does this represent? God’s sovereign, complete and perfect plan for His creation.
The question that follows from the angel, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” is the hinge point of all history. The angel found no-one who had either the power, the wisdom, or the moral standing to break open the seals and unlock the fullness of God’s plans and purpose. John longs to know the details of God’s plan, so in this moment he found himself weeping uncontrollably. But that’s not where the vision ends. As John wept, he heard one of elders say, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” Revelation 5:5 (NIVUK)
The Lion of Judah and the Root of David are both messianic images from the Old Testament found in Genesis and Isaiah, respectively. Jesus is the only one worthy to open the scroll. Heaven doesn’t just declare the Lord’s holiness; it declares His worthiness. Why? Because He is not only King by position, but also, He is King by right. Everything exists because of Him. He is worthy because He is Creator and there will come a day when, ‘There will be no more death, or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”’ Revelation 21:4-5 (NIVUK)
When Jesus says He is making all things new, it refers to a comprehensive spiritual renewal and transformation that occurs through faith in Him, not just a physical renovation of the world. This includes the forgiveness of sins, a new relationship with God, and the promise of a transformed future, both individually and collectively. Ultimately, it points to a complete restoration of creation, culminating in a new heaven and a new earth.
OVERCOMER INSIGHT
Overcomers live from a place of worship. They live to honour the One who is worthy, who has overcome death itself, and at the appointed time, will make all things new.

LISTEN
Prayer FOCUS
- Read aloud Psalm 145 and meditate on it. Declare facets of His nature as described in this wonderful psalm; great, worthy, mighty, awesome, majestic, good, righteous, compassionate, trustworthy, faithful.
- Repent of and name any ‘lesser things’ that have stolen your affection from the One who is worthy. Offer your life again as a living sacrifice to the One who is worthy of it all (see Romans 12:1-2).
- Pray for a release of God’s kingdom plans to be established in your life, in your family, in your sphere of influence, and in our church.
- Pray that Jesus would reveal Himself in dreams and visions to those in nations where confessing His name costs everything. Pray for the raising of underground movements where the cry of ‘Holy, holy, holy’, is offered to heaven as sweet incense.
