DAY 3

JESUS THE COMING KING

‘Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.’ Revelation 1:7 (ESV)

Reflection

This verse thunders with hope and urgency. Jesus is not only the One who came in humility, He is the One who will return in glory. This is not a myth or wishful thinking; it’s the sure and glorious future for every follower of Jesus. The early church was surrounded by pressure and persecution, but John’s vision lifts their eyes to the coming of the King.

‘Behold, he is coming with the clouds’, is a direct echo from the book of Daniel, ‘In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshipped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.’ Daniel 7:13-14 (NIVUK)

Before Jesus’ ascension back into heaven after His resurrection, two angels assured the disciples of His return, ‘“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go.”’ Acts 1:11 (NIVUK)

Jesus’ return will be unmistakeable and universal. Every eye will see Him, no power can hide from His coming. For some, that day will bring deep mourning, a realisation of having resisted His grace. For others, it is the long-awaited arrival of the King, bringing unspeakable joy and relief. John’s bold declaration, ‘Even so. Amen.’ is an act of worship and longing. The world’s brokenness will end; justice, healing, and truth will triumph. As the apostle Paul encourages us, ‘…we wait for the blessed hope – the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ.’ Titus 2:13 (NIVUK)

But this hope is not an escape from reality. It’s an anchor for how we must live today, ‘For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age…’ Titus 2:11-12 (NIVUK)

Let His coming reframe your motivation to share your faith and keep your heart pure. Remember, our King is coming. The story ends not only with His victory, but also His judgement. So, let’s allow His Spirit to stir our hearts with compassion and boldness to share the good news with those around us.

OVERCOMER INSIGHT

Prayer FOCUS

  • The Bible Society have recently released a report, called The Quiet Revival, indicating that church attendance in the UK is significantly on the rise, particularly amongst Gen Z. Let’s be ready to welcome those seeking, and let’s pray for a continued curiosity about faith, leading to genuine conversions and a commitment to discipleship.
  • We have ongoing partnerships with some great Christian charities, including Bulembu, Heart for Lebanon, as well as our new project with Tearfund to see community transformation in Tanzania. Please pray that their work will continue to have a powerful and lasting impact as they bring the love and light of Jesus into those nations.
  • There are many Christians around the world who continue to be persecuted for their faith. Open Doors, a Christian charity, send regular updates to inform and encourage us to pray into these incredibly difficult situations. You can find out more and subscribe to their updates here.
